For ease of reading I have made words I wrote myself a bit larger and blue. I asked each of these to write me some paragraphs on ocean warming. The results are below.
ChatGPT
The ocean is warming at a rapid pace, and the rate of warming has increased over the past few decades. It is difficult to give a precise number for how fast the ocean is warming, as this can vary depending on the location and the time of year. However, studies have shown that the ocean has absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat that has been generated by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels. This has led to an overall warming of the ocean, with the top 2,300 feet of the ocean having warmed by an average of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit per decade since 1969. This may not seem like a lot, but it is having significant effects on marine life and the overall climate.
ChatGPT: Second attempt.
Ocean warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the world's oceans. This is a major aspect of global warming, which is the long-term warming of the planet due to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The oceans play a vital role in regulating the Earth's climate, and their warming can have significant impacts on weather patterns, sea levels, and marine life. The main cause of ocean warming is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans, leading to a rise in their temperature. Ocean warming can also be caused by volcanic eruptions and changes in the Earth's orbit. The effects of ocean warming are widespread and include more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, and storms, as well as the bleaching and death of coral reefs and the alteration of marine ecosystems.
Rytr
The warming of the ocean waters is a major topic that is affecting coral reefs and marine life. The oceans are getting warmer due to climate change, which has a number of negative effects on the environment. One of these effects is that coral reefs are dying and marine life is being threatened.
Rytr: Second attempt
The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. It covers more than 70% of the planet’s surface and contains 97% of all life on Earth. The ocean is also a major regulator of the Earth’s climate, absorbing heat from the atmosphere and storing it in its depths.
Ocean warming is one of the most significant threats to coral reefs, which are home to 25% of all marine life. Coral reefs provide food and shelter for many species, including humans. They also protect coastlines from storms and offer a source of income for coastal communities through tourism and fishing.
Ryter: Third attempt.
The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. It covers more than 70% of the planet’s surface and contains 97% of all life on Earth. The ocean is also a major regulator of the Earth’s climate, absorbing about one-third of the carbon dioxide that humans produce each year.
Ocean warming is a phenomenon where oceans are getting warmer due to climate change. This has been happening for decades and it has been accelerating in recent years. The warming causes coral reefs to bleach, which can lead to their death if they don't have time to recover from this event.
ChatGPT does a much better job.
Now what to do about this problem, or is it even a problem? I have held the opinion for a long time that most school administrators have shifted away from caring about actual education. Their main goal appears to be appeasing the customers, which is how the students are referred to. A totally business-oriented attitude has slowly pervaded the education space. With horrible consequences. As other have said, the true customers of the education system is not the student, but society as a whole. But these new administrators' goal is to keep students happy, not educate them. Things like plagerism are only dealt with when they have to be. What will be the response of administrators to AI used to write whole papers. If it stays on the down-low, nothing. They will due nothing.
I asked ChatGPT to provide me with a response to the statement most education administrators do not care about educating students; the response is below.
Education administrators prioritize other aspects of their job, such as budgeting, facility management, or compliance with regulations, over educational outcomes. This may be due to a variety of factors, such as limited resources or external pressures.
Once AI explodes even more there will be a need to address it more directly. On that front the ChatGPT makers have another bot system that detects AI generation in sections of texts.
I used the detector of AI generated text on the first paragraph I generated, here is the response:
I did the same in a paragraph I wrote on this subject: Phew, I’m in the clear, I am not a robot. Take that Issac Asimov.
Lastly:
These AI programs are also supposed to summarize whole papers for you: I tried that with Chat GPT and Rytr and could not accomplish that. It was too much text for ChatGPt to handle; Rytr may have been able to do it if I paid for extras with a subscription, but this is me just exploring and having fun with these AI programs, so I was not going to pay $.
Has AI come of age? Is it now a brave new world? I don’t know. It is fun to play with, but it's also pretty chunky. In one way, it is a much better writer than I because I put crap like this in sentences and sometimes don't follow all those grammar rules we were taught years ago. However, the provided text output feels wooden. In addition, of particular importance, if you write scientific stuff, they are not necessarily accurate. They can, in effect, lie to you.
Fun to explore but now on to more interesting things:
Happy Holidays.
Or, as ChatGPT wrote it:
Happy holidays! I hope you are having a wonderful time and enjoying the holiday season. Whether you are celebrating with family and friends, or taking some time to relax and recharge, I wish you all the best. May your holiday be filled with joy, love, and all the things that bring you happiness.
